Star Wars Droids & Star Wars Rebels - animated series

John has us take a look at two animated series based on the Star Wars property. The earliest example of animated Star Wars is the first thing we examine, Droids. The latest example we examine is Rebels.

The Star Wars holiday special showcased an animated short featuring Boba Fett and was the first foray in animation with the property.

Droids, set about a decade before A New Hope, follows R2D2 and C3P0 as they bumble across the universe falling into one adventure after another.

Rebels, starting about 5 years prior to A New Hope, follows a group of mercenary smugglers as they shift from survival into full rebellion against the Empire.

Droids isn’t readily available in a streaming or disc format, though you can find some episodes online. Rebels is available on iTunesAmazon and on Disney XD.

DuckTales - original animated series and reboot series

Brian’s pick is one of the most memorable Disney television animation series. Based on the comic and character by Carl Barks, DuckTales follows the adventures of money obsessed Scrooge McDuck.

The original series had an impressive level of animation for television and put Disney TV squarely in the front for viewers.

Spawning a couple spinoffs and a video game it was a smash It is a wonder that the series too so long to reboot. The new style is much more economical, modern yes, but not as richly animated as its predecessor.

When Disney’s streaming service launches perhaps DuckTales will become more widely available, but for now you can find the original series on Amazon and the new series air on Disney XD and is on iTunes and Amazon digitally.

NEXT WEEK: We conclude with John pick, a pair of Star Wars animated series, one of the first and one of the most recent.

GLOW - the Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling (documentary & netflix series)

Keith’s pick explores a short-lived 80′s wrestling show and the netflix series that recently aired dramatizing it.

The series is funny and dark. The casting is great with lots of physical performances.

The documentary is alright, it gives a glimpse at the world of the show from the perspective of the performers.

The GLOW series is available on Netflix. The GLOW documentary is likewise up on Netflix.

NEXT WEEK: Brian’s pick is up as we discuss the original DuckTales series and contrast it with the new DuckTales.

Saturday Morning Cartoons’ Greatest Hits (album 1995)

Season four kicks off with this pick from Jules of cartoon theme songs from some 70′s properties as covered by mid-nineties alternative rock bands.

The album had a TV special tie-in starring Drew Barrymore, which is around on YouTube if you want to dig it up.

There are a few good tracks in here. There are better covers by better bands, and better theme songs, but this is what they put together.

This buried ‘gem’ of an album is not currently in print. eBay, amazon, or other resellers may have it. You can probably find it on YouTube.

Noel (animated TV special 1992)

Our final episode with Dan is also his pick! And what a special and joyous way to spend our Christmas.

The Rankin & Bass production is cheap looking for early nineties animation. If it weren’t for the relationship of the writer to the production house I doubt this special would have been released.

Even with a sparse and limited subject matter, which is reflected in the still images we’re presenting here, the animation is very budget concious.

This special is around online to watch, you can shell out for a VHS on amazon, or the Little Golden Book that accompanied the release of the special.

The Nutcracker 3d (movie 2010)

Jules sure picked a winner this time... This is a tale of the rise of fascism and the blitz with a veneer of music and holiday magic.

The director felt that film can’t capture ballet so he avoided dancing, instead opting to shoehorn lyrics into the Tchaikovsky composition. I can’t imagine how they got Tim Rice to help with these clunky phrases.

The imagery is at times beautiful and often disturbing.

This is a mess of a movie, it is like 3 half-movies and the corpse of a ballet smashed into one, so that means it’s a bargain on Bluray from Amazon or iTunes streaming

Honestly though try not to pay to see this, and probably don’t waste your time.

The Ventures’ Christmas Album (1965)

Holiday albums are amongst some of the top selling records of all time, which means lots of bands have a Christmas record. We are bombarded by them from the moment Halloween decorations leave the shelves. Keith’s pick is one of the few you may be able to stomach on repeat listen.

The Ventures are a prolific & pioneering band, playing with pedals and effects to create sounds that to date had never been used in a music track.

The band is made up of true craftsmen- they have the precision of the playing down pat and then become playful in mixing songs and genres.

You can listen to the album on Spotify and purchase it on Amazon or iTunes.

A Christmas Dream (tv special 1984)

It was a golden age of prime time network television. A-Team, Webster, and dozens of new shows were bringing in the viewers. In the tradition of TV specials NBC made A Christmas Dream, a loose narrative upon which to hang celebrity appearances, ice skating, ventriloquism, music, magic, and when you’re lulled in- a healthy dose of dogma.

The two featured stars, Emmanuel Lewis and Mr. T, were both on shows taking boasting huge ratings.

Emmanuel Lewis plays latch-key kid and humbug “Johnny.”

Mr. T plays an untitled character, credited as Santa, who strives to bring the joy and true meaning of Christmas to Johnny.

The special is hard to come by, excepting posts by web-archivists

Are You Afraid of the Dark “Tale of the Doll Maker” (tv episode)

Giaco puts a spooky cap on our spooky eps with a classic episode of kids TV horror from the 90′s.

The series allowed for a wide range of story types and a variety of scares. Tale of the Doll Maker has very little concrete solutions- the characters survive, but we don’t know what they survived or how it came to be.

The protagonist’s behavior was certainly ahead of its time. She is the definition of an anti-hero, breaking in and ransacking the locked house of her missing friend

The tale establishes rules of a strange phenomena and an eery atmosphere with no dialogue and tasteful sound design.

The short is part of the first Late Night Work Club anthology collection.

Battle at Kruger (amateur )

Jules’ brings us a literal watering hole, in the form of an amateur tourists safari video that packs an entire day of nature channel drama into under 9 minutes.

The story begins with a small pack of water buffalo approaching the water, unaware of the lions who are lying in wait.

A chase begins as the lions pounce and pick off the calf of the pack.

Surprise twist when the struggling calf is snagged by a croc from the water’s edge!

Crowd Crush (tv series)

When Casey thinks watering hole he thinks ‘gathering of people’ and crowd crush is that gathering taken to the extreme.

A crowd starts acting like a fluid when it reaches a certain density. Extracting yourself from one of these crowds is often literally swimming upstream.

The pilgrimage to Mecca for Hajj is one of the events that regularly draws massive crowds and therefore crowd crush.

As cities become more densely populated the chance of finding yourself in one if these pressed increases. Be careful and aware when you are in a crowd.

Deep Space Nine (tv series)

To start us off John brings the third Star Trek series to the table. Following in the success of The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine took a new approach to the Star Trek formula. Instead of traveling to new places each episode, they setup a station on the frontier of the explored universe and let the trouble come to them.

The watering hole was Quark’s bar- a gathering place for people from across all stripes of society and morality.

The bar was established as an integral part of the stations community right from the pilot episode.

The series took some chances, directly tackling race and spirituality, where The Next Generation often took a more removed philosophical approach.

You can stream Deep Space Nine on Netflix and find it for sale on iTunes and Amazon.

Forgotten Silver (movie)

John starts us off with a documentary that went direct to TV in New Zealand. It puts forward the tale of a kiwi inventor and filmmaker who actually was first in many fields.

The documentary is a short project Peter Jackson put together after Heavenly Creatures and before he directed The Frighteners.

The film uses all the common documentary tropes to paint a picture of a national hero. It is a complete fabrication.

Forgotten Silver is available on iTunes and there are DVD copies out in the world.

Bone (comic)

Keith rounds off our topic with a comic by writer/illustrator Jeff Smith. Initially self-published it was picked up for full publication by Image.

The three bone cousins are a classic comedy trio, with the naive nervous nelly, the mean schemer, and the carefree wildcard.

Jeff smith was heavily inspired by past comic illustrators, most notable Walt Kelly.

Bone is available at most bookstores and libraries in both small collected volumes and large ‘complete’ volumes, in color and in black and white. You can also purchase it on Amazon.

Tropicalia (music and art movement)

Keith’s pick for Hot, Hot, Hot is the subversive psychedelic music/art/political movement from Brazil in 50′s, 60′s and 70′s: Tropicalia.

The movement combined folk, traditional instruments, modern electronic instruments and a variety of play styles.

Gilberto Gil is one of the founders of the movement.

Os Mutantes took on the movement and still represents today!

There are a number of collections available. You should go down the rabbit hole!

Do the Right Thing (movie 1989)

Jules’ pick for the Hot topic is Spike Lee’s indy feature that explores growing tensions in the growing heat of a summer in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn.

The film kicks off style as Rosie Perez dances in front of stage-lit stoops

Using classic theatrical tropes to contrast the individuals Spike Lee is able to deftly get to the subtle tensions of race and community.

You can purchase Do The Right Thing on iTunes or Amazon. It is streaming on HBO as of this recording.

The band was a two album project. You’ve probably heard the songs on a few commercials.

Erlend Øye is a prolific composer who spearheaded Whitest Boy Alive. The band is just one of many forms his musical career has taken.

The Black Company (1984 - novel)

John’s pick for success is the a fantasy book series that feels modern and fresh compared to the high-fantasy we’re used to. The series debuted a decade before Game of Thrones.

The books follow a group of mercenaries as they try to survive in a war where they have been hired by the ‘evil’ side.

The first in this series was Author Glen Cook’s first published book.

You can purchase the Black Company on Amazon or your local bookstore. The audiobook is pretty good too.

The Player (1992 - movie)

Giaco’s pick for success is the Robert Altman film from the early nineties that is widely known for its, at the time, record length opening shot.

The story is very Hollywood. It explores a thriller against the shallow backdrop of the sausage making of big studio films.

Tim Robbins stars as a soulless producer and studio exec. who rarely drinks a drop and who’s passions are all self-serving.

You should continue on through the rest of Robert Altman’s work, Popeye, M.A.S.H., Nashville- all works of a master.

The Royal Tenebaums (2001 - movie)

Keith’s pick for success is the third feature from director Wes Anderson. The movie deals with characters who peaked as children, as they measure success.

This is arguably the best effort yet from this director. It is a love letter to New York and the attention to detail in both characters and art direction makes itripe for many watches.

The performances are fantastic. This feature exposed people to a number of actors and aspects of actors, that they had not previously been privy to.

You can stream the Royal Tenenbaums on Film Struck or purchase it on Amazon. We can’t recommend the Blu-Ray from Criterion enough, so many great extra features.

Jules wants to show you a new path for you to embrace this topic of Success - with THE SECRET.

This DVD & accompanying book are a mish-mash of Western majick and metaphysics purporting to reveal truths that you can to into for self-enrichment.

The film combines self-proscribed experts with a spurious historical background to sell a toolkit of practices to the masses.

You can stream the Secret on Netflix.

Spring Breakers (movie 2012)

Jules’ pick is the most commercial work from Writer-Director Harmony Korine (Kids, Gummo, Julien Donkey-Boy). This look at the drugs and debauchery of Florida over spring break plays with time and structure to evoke a drug fueled conception of reality.

The cast are made up of Harnony’s wife and three Disney-star level actresses, plus James Franco.

The colors and tone are all over the top. A fun romp and maybe not the best Korine flick, but a standout for its budget and cast.

You can stream on Showtime or purchase on Amazon and iTunes.

Ultimate (sport)

John’s pick is a sport, a fun one that easy to just pick up and play, you just need a handful of people, a field and a flying disc. From the humble beginnings as a pie-tin tossed around at the beach, Frisbees have become a staple for picnics and beach romps.

In the late 60′s a number of high school students, fans of playing with the Frisbee, created a game that within a few years was hosting major championships. Ultimate was born!

Ferdinand the Bull (Disney Animated Short 1938)

Mary brings her Spring pick in - the classic animated short based on the classic illustrated children’s book.

Ferdinand the Bull found itself banned by facists and Nazis.

The caricatures of the men are problematic, but the message of pacifism and taking pleasure in your bliss without worrying about following the crowd or the expectations of your birth are great.

You watch Ferdinand on most online video hosting sites.

Re-arange Us - Mates of State (2008 - album)

He makes noise about bringing too many albums to the show- but Keith is getting no complaints. Especially when he brings great bands like Mates of States to the table.

The subject of this Spring pick is the band’s ‘grown-up’ album, with more instruments and a more somber tone at times.

This duo have made rich and complex sounds with tons of energy like they were a much larger band, and they make it look easy.

You can purchase Re-arrange Us on iTunes and Amazon or stream it on Spotify.

The Narrows (2016 - album)

Keith closes out our topic with his pick from Grant-Lee Phillips.

The latest from the troubadour focus on his roots and the past.

As he ages it is interesting to see the path his music is taking.

You can purchase The Narrows on iTunes and Amazon, Stream it on Spotify, and see Grant Lee Phillips cameo on the new mini-season of Gilmore Girls on Netflix.

Toad Road (2012 - movie)

A true combination of Fact and Fiction and Weird, Matt Schwartz’s pick this week is a move from 2012. It was a few years in the making.

The director sought a group of post-high school young adults who were living outside Philadelphia and partying.

The film is part real footage, part scripted narrative, with ‘actors’ who are actually doing the drugs, passing out, getting in fights, and lighting each others pubic hair on fire.

The fiction element is an urban legend of the area, a passage through a series of gates in the woods that are the path to hell. They also mirror the world of aimlessness nihilism and addiction that the people in the story are going through.

Sadly the actress, Sara Anne John, who plays the female lead, died of an overdose shortly before the film’s release. She was an aspiring poet and model living in NYC.

You can purchase Toad Road on iTunes and Amazon.

Barba*rossa (deck building card game)

This is a weird one, a Japanese card game in the vein of Dominion, but with a very off-putting theme and doubling down with off-putting art. This is John’s pick for Weird - and it certainly fits.

Originally published in Japan in 2010 and lapsing out of print in 2013 an English translation was kickstarted in 2015.

The players take the role of German generals in WWII who are mounting a campaign against Russia. Oh, and all the troops are represented by scantily clad manga illustrations.

A historical photograph version was also printed, it may be more disturbing because it is far less absurd and lets the theme really stand out.

You can purchase Barbarossa and the sequel El Alamein on Amazon- but do you really want to? I’d get Dominion first.

Finders Keeprs (documentary)

To kick off our topic Jules is recommending a documentary from 2015. The story is strange and twisting and full of odd characters.

The setup- a man buys a grill/smoker in a storage locker auction. Inside the grill is a human foot. The man to whom the foot belongs comes asking for his foot back.

Shannon found the foot after buying the grill and he believes it to be his ticket to fame.

John Wood is the one who used to be attached to the foot. He wants it back. More strangeness ensues.

Roberto Clemente (baseball hall-of-famer)

Our final selection comes from guest host Matt Rodriguez. His choice for a do-gooder is the record- and barrier-breaking baseball player Robert Clemente.

One of the first Puerto Rican major league players, Clemente had to deal with segregation racism in his career.

His sports achievements allowed him to provide for his family and to put his well-earned fame and wealth towards helping those in need.

Roberto Clemente lost his life in a plane accident on the way from Puerto Rico to Nicaragua where he was bring humanitarian relief following a natural disaster in that country.

Matt Damon (actor and humanitarian)

Public voices often use their platforms to hold up a mirror or a magnifying glass to the uncomfortable truths and forgotten people. When those people are entertainers they are often met with calls to sit down and shut up. Keith brings up Matt Damon as an actor that dedicates time and resources to philanthropic and humanitarian efforts.

One of his larger efforts is to provide clean water to countries and people that lack the infrastructure and resources.

It is telling that he uses his public face, outside of his films, to promote the social and economic struggles of people in need.

The film The Informant! is available on Amazon and iTunes.

White Helmets (documentary)

An Oscar and a Nobel Peace Prize - these do-gooders have got the gold, but their story is far from luxurious and peaceful. Jules brings this documentary about a Syrian civil defense force as his pick.

Be wary of the disinformation and conspiracy sites out there touting that this is terrorist linked propaganda. Syria has powerful backers, like Russia, and misinformation and spurious conspiracy theories abound.

There are some powerful moments, like the rescue of an infant from beneath a bombed out building. John is a little bit skeptical- because the film is moving and outside his experiences, so he is wary of being manipulated.

This is a work of solid documentary making and the hands of the documentarian are well hidden, the people and events speak literally for themselves.

White Helmets is available on Netflix.

Richard Wayman (film producer & accountant)

Our first Do-Gooder is proposed by John. Wayman started the Highway Saftey Foundation in Ohio in the 1950s.

What started off as a hobby for photography and a friendship with the police blossomed into a nationally distributed educational film company.

The educational films focused on the behavior of the driver, where the safety of the vehicles and road conditions came secondary.

You can find videos, like the first film “Signal 30″ on Youtube.

There is a documentary available on Fandor and Amazon about Wayman and his impact as an educational film producer.

Eddie Murphy (actor, comedian, musician)

Keith’s love of the movie “Coming to America” has him asking ‘What Happened’ to Eddie Murphy.

After his rise as a comedian and then as a member of SNL he became a consistent movie star. Coming to America presents a mainstream comedy with a mostly black cast- something that was not often seen at the time.

Eddie Murphy took on a number of characters, often in extensive makeup, a choice that later became a gimmick in movies like “The Clumps.”

Richard Kelly (director)

John wants to know what happened to Richard Kelly, director of indy-breakout Donnie Darko, since 2001.

The 2001 dark sci-fi indy feature Donnie Darko was a hit at the festivals early in the year. It had to contend with the September 11, 2001 terror attack on New York that occurred just as it was slated for national theatrical release.

Richard Kelly has directed a couple features since Donnie Darko; Southland Tales and The Button, both are science fiction. He has also produced a number of films and written scripts, the most talked about are adaptations that were never produced.

Johnny Depp (actor)

Keith wants to know what happened to Johnny Depp.

The musician-turned-actor seems to have embraced the pageantry of his roles, fully submerging himself in the makeup and costume.

With bandmates like Alive Cooper he may have gained more of a penchant for vaudevillian staginess.

Once a teenaged super-star, now a passionate character actor, what happened?

Antichrist (2009)

Jules’ finally is a tough one- the movie that people walked out on at Sundance.

Lar Von Trier is a challenging figure, he is notoriously hard on female actors and portrays women harshly in a number of his films.

Charlotte Gainsborough plays a woman who seems to be falling apart because of the death of her son, but may have had some darkness stewing before that.

Willem Dafoe plays a manipulative psychologist husband who is trying to fix his wife, arguably so she conforms to his idea of grief.

White Light / Black Rain (2007)

Kicking off our new Topic is Jules with ‘White Light / Black Rain,’ a documentary about the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima at the tail end of World War Two.

The controversy as to whether we should have used the weapons is secondary to the suffering of the people who were effected.

Commonly is it the perspective from the sky that we tend to focus on in terms of the nuclear bomb.

It is the artwork and recounting of eyewitnesses that lets this documentary show you the effects of the bomb from the ground.

New To You ep246: Musicals Pt3

Jesus Christ Superstar (1970)

The sung through rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice is Jules’ pick for musicals this week (and Kristen taught us the term ‘sung through’).

The musical draws parallels to the cultural revolution of the 60′s and the rise of the Christ cult, and the violence that ended those movements.

There are also notions of inevitability and questions of freewill. Specifically that Judas’ betrayal and Jesus’ fate were preordained and the will of God, and no matter how hard they worked against that fate the outcome would be the same.

The songs run the gamut of emotional, sappy, silly, and dramatic.

Behind the scenes, Judas, Jesus and Mary Magdalene on the left.

You can purchase or stream Jesus Christ Superstar on Amazon and iTunes. The soundtrack is available on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify.

Kristen’s pick is the Sondheim take on the classic fairy tales. This musical was recently released as a movie.

The musical combines the Baker & his Wife, Rapunzel, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Jack and the Beanstalk and a few more tales.

The original cast included Bernadette Peters as the witch.

Kristen played the witch in her high-school production.

Kristen post transformation.

Pick up the filmed live production on Amazon or iTunes and the soundtrack on Amazon, iTunes, or streaming on Spotify. Avoid the new movie (that’s our consensus) but if you really need to see it you can find it on Amazon and iTunes.

Hedwig is a gender-queer punk rocker who underwent a botched sex reassignment surgery to flee East Berlin and came to the US where she became leader of a dive-bar band.

Left to Right: Katie Roumelprod (producer on the film), John Cameron Mitchell (creator, writer), Christine Vachonprod (producer on the film) and Stephen Trask (composer and lyricist).

We wrap up horror this week and as we get into the pick Keith brings a couple things that are new to him to the table: Turbo Kid from Netflix and Malcolm Galdwell’s Revisionist History.

Horror VR (Vive or Gear)

Jules had us over one by one to play a variety of VR horror games.

A Chair in a Room: Greenhaven is a spooky Myst puzzle psychological horror game. Pretty creepy.

Brookhaven Experiment is a shooter thriller.

The Scary sisters is on the Gear VR, a simple story based experiment.

The Vive allows you to interact with the environment with hand controls and a little bit of actual tracked body movement. The gear is a simpler headset system with a controller.

From Beyond (Movie, 1986)

John brings a b-movie from the 80′s to the plate, the less successful second Lovecraft based film from the director of Re-Animator.

The imagery is pretty interesting and the visual effects are very entertaining.

The original Lovecraft story that the film is based on, also called “From Beyond” is not considered one of Lovecraft’s better stories.

The cast and sets are pretty sparse, but John contends that that is something the director intentionally sought.

From Beyond is available on Amazon.

Giaco recommends the Seattle EMP music museum. They are currently hosting a Horror Film exhibit.

We’re starting a new topic this week with a returning guest host, Giaco Furino.

Before digging into the first pick John recommends “Stranger Things” from Netflix.

______________________

Shock Value by Jason Zinoman (Book, 2011)

Giaco’s pick is a non-fiction book that explores the rise of the ‘new horror’ genre in the 60′s through the 80′s.

The book explores masters of horror that wrested the genre from the likes of Hitchcock and Corman.

Wes Craven’s Last House on the Left is used to define the strong shift from code films into post-code.

The genesis of the film Alien is explored in the rocky career of Dan O’Bannon.

You can purchase Shock Value on Amazon.

New To You ep239: Pop Culture

Oh Brother Where Art Thou Soundtrack & Bob Dylan’s Blonde on Blonde

Before we get into our topic John tells us about his recent experience seeing Weird Al on the Mandatory Fun tour.

Pat and Keith tell us about what they want to share with their sons, and the consensus is music.

Pat has been playing for and singing with Henry. His hope is to get Henry playing music with him, and if anything come to love the traditional/gospel music as represented in the Oh Brother soundtrack.

Keith is excited to share some of the later Blonde on Blonde tracks with Felix. At the moment Felix is into the Jack Johnson Curious George soundtrack.

A pale imitation of Spider-Man House.

New To You ep238: Kubo & the Two Strings, One-off

Kubo and the Two Strings (Animated Feature 2016)

Before we dive into our pick we discuss two new series:

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norell from the BBC and The Get Down from Netflix. We also expound on the virtues of a forgotten piece of tech, the antenna.

This was a consensus pick, we all saw this film recently.

You can likely discount the conspiracy theories about the formation of Laika, we’re ill-informed animation nerds, but you can take our word at face value on the process- that’s our jam.

Laika continues to push the boundaries of stop-motion animation. We can’t stress enough that seeing their movies and telling other people to go watch them supports this art.

Kubo is still in some theaters and is available for pre-order on streaming and physical formats.

New To You ep237: Anime pt4

Teylor kicks us off this week with a details of her Pokemon Go exploits.

___________

pt4: Cowboy Bebop (Anime 2001)

Keith’s pick this week is the genre-blending series from director Shinichirō Watanabe. This 26 episode series (plus a movie) explores a futuristic galaxy with a group of bounty hunters.

The writers started with extensive world building, detailing all the different planets and expressions of civilization throughout the universe. They then played with different tropes within the world they had built.

Originally imagined as a toy vehicle Bandai gave them cart blanche, the one condition being they have cool space ships. Part way through the project Bandai toys realized the series wouldn’t work for their purposes. Bandai Visual (a separate division) swept in before the series was cancelled to be a production partner.

Composer Yoko Kanno formed a Jazz & Blues band “The Seatbelts” as part of the process of composing the score and soundtrack for the series. The music is some of the best written for television.

The opening title sequence, which includes the song “Tank,” is at once retro and original- it has influenced a number of animated series opening since, like Teen Titians on Cartoon Network.

The cast of characters are unique individuals with their own stories. Each character has their storyline explored through the course of their adventures.

You can purchase the anime on Amazon, or stream it on Hulu

New To You ep236: Anime pt3

In our opener Keith expounds on his favorite museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art. You can get a membership to this beacon of culture in a desert of lots of other culture that is NYC.

___________

pt3: Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad (Manga & Anime 1999-2008)

John’s pick this week, which he gets to after a rambling retelling of his path to discovering Anime, is the music/rock band anime & manga “Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad.”

The Manga started in 1999 and finished in 2008, it was collected in 34 volumes. Unfortunately the US localization rights were released before the entire series was published in the states. The mangaka Harold Sakuishi was a fan of wrestling and baseball, both of which he did comics for and references in Beck.

The animated series is pretty economical and relays the first third or so of the manga over 26 episodes.

The Beat Crusaders provided most of the music, making this one of the better series about musicians and bands, with fun and poppy rock music.

Fender released a series of guitars inspired by designs from the series, which themselves were inspired from actual guitar models.

You can purchase the anime on Amazon, or stream it on Hulu

Before we get into our main pick from Jules shares something new to him: the Ricoh Theta S, a 360 Camera.

He took a Panorama of us all at the table

Check it out in an explorable format here on John’s Facebook

___________

pt2: Serial Experiments Lain (Anime 1998)

Teylor presents her pick on our topic this week with the animated 13 episode series Serial Experiments Lain. This series is a standout for the writer and producers.

Yoshitoshi ABe lent his talents as the character designer. He has designed for a number of series. Two great ones, as mentioned by Teylor; NieA 7 & Haibane Renmei.

Lain explores the breakdown of self and mental health as well as existential questions in a world where we construct new realities and selves to fill a ‘virtual’ space.

Lain is drawn and voice directed differently baed on the which aspect of her personality she takes on.

A diligent denizen of the wired gathered all the boards from the extra features and posted them here.

You can purchase the anime on Amazon, or stream it on Hulu. There are storyboards on some of the commentary tracks.

___________

pt4: Conan by Robert E. Howard (Pulp Stories 1930s)

John recounts his First Love in the auspice of Conan the Barbarian and the collected pulp stories of Robert E Howard!

Frazetta’s Conan illustrations inspired many imitators.

Boxing, westerns, weird, and swords & sorcery; the pulp stomping grounds of REH.

Weird Tales, December 1932 where Conan first made his appearance in the tale “The Phoenix and the Sword.”

___________

pt2: The Howard Stern Show

The First Love that captured David’s imagination was the ‘shock jock’ turned self-styled ‘king of all media’ Howard Stern.

Howard has certainly become a cultural icon.Stern got his start on radio in 1976. He know from 5 that this was what he wanted to do.

pt1: Weezer’s Pinkerton (Album 1996)

Keith’s first love is the second album form Weezer.

After the first album was a runaway hit the second album was met with a harsh critical eye.

The original line-up (1992). The band shifted drastically after Pinkerton.

El Scorcho was one of the singles off the record.

In the setup Keith shares a podcast recommendation; Hello from the Magic Tavern, a fictional story world cast with Chicago improv talent.

___________

pt4: ”Pinhead” from Leave Home by the Ramones (Song 1977)

This week is a great pick from Keith a 4 issue mini-series from writer Zeb Wells and artist Seth Fisher.

Leave Home was their 2nd album - released in 1977.

Schlitzie, from Tod Browning’s 1932 film “Freaks,” was microcephalic performer Simon Metz from New York. The Ramones were inspired by this performance to write their track “Pinhead.”

The pinhead costume sported at Ramones’ concerts.

The iconic phrase at a show.

You can purchase Tod Browning’s Freaks on Amazon or iTunes.

You can purchase Leave Home on iTunes and Amazon or stream on Spotify.

___________

pt2: Korn “Freak on a Leash” (Nu-Metal Music 1998)

Adam brought a challenge to the table this week. None of us (Adam included) were/are fans of the Nu-Metal genre. Heck Keith even questions that it is a genre.

This music video features animation from Todd MacFarlane studios- an animation outfit that lasted about as long as the Nu-Metal kick.

Another Nu-Metal band “Slipknot”- such wonderful masks!

As we get into the pick John sidetracked a bit to share about a spate of narrative horror podcasts he’s been listening to check out any of the following if you’re a fan of radio drama, or spooky stuff:

Limetown

The Message

The Black Tapes

Tanis

Lore

___________

pt1: Freaked (Film 1993)

Jule’s pick was the inspiration for this topic. Any reason to watch this Alex Winters and Tommy Stern work of art is welcome. The titles alone are worth the weird. Stop Motion Stratacut clay animation at its strangest- rife with Jan Svankmajer nods.

The title track is Henry Rollins.

Yes that is a wooden Randy Quaid - he may be the best thing about this movie.

Actually- these Rastafar-Eyes may be the best thing about this movie.

They actually made merchandise for this picture- and they are appropriately weird.

You can purchase Freaked on Amazon. Definitely check out Alex Winter’s site to see his other project and his info on the movie.

pt4: Pride & Prejudice (Film 2005)

Keith’s pick this week is post-9/11 adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice by director Joe Wright.

The beautiful pastoral setting and painterly composition of scenes captured Keith’s eye.

Keira Knightley as the straight-shooting Elizabeth Bennett. This movie has a great cast.

Mr. Darcy in the Mist. Matthew Macfadyen plays the aloof bachelor.

pt3: Death Note (Manga 2003)

Proving once again that he has the credentials of a raving otaku John introduces the 2003-2006 manga from Tsugumi Ohba.

The series runs in 12 standard manga volumes, which have been collected in a few different editions.

Light Yagami - the human who gets his hand on the Death Note, isn’t exactly a compassionate person.

“L” - the super detective soon gets on the case.

Their’s is an epic struggle.

You can get the entire series as 12 volumes on Amazon, or get it as 6 double volumes also on Amazon. The anime is on Hulu, or for sale on Amazon.

I, Claudius (TV Miniseries 1976)

For Jules the BBC/PBS miniseries that brings Robert Graves’ I, Claudius to life was a Slow Burn.

The series follows the Emperor Claudius as he looks back on his life amongst the Roman royals and how he maneuvered their machinations.

Derek Jacobi plays the bumbling (put on?) Claudius in a story that plays like a real life Game of Thrones.

Who’s that guy with all that hair?
